Begin the road trip by driving out of city limits, leaving the hustle-bustle behind, in quest for calmer mountains towards Gangotri. After a while into the drive, we halt for breakfast. Do not overeat considering the twisting and turning roads. As we go further, you find yourself moving along the bank of River Bhagirathi. The well laid road leads us to Uttarkashi, a town well known for its meditators and rishis. Fill your bellies with tasty food as you can sense freshness in the air and water. We pass through hot water springs , a military station Harshil and passing adjacently from Neylong Border , we reach Gangtori. We begin our trek next day in the morning from Gangotri . Gangotri is known as the source of the holy river Ganga (though the actual source is Gaumukh ).

The trail not only goes through rugged terrains alongside the Bhagirathi River but also climbs up to rugged mountains. Bhojbasa , abode of birch trees , is a vast open expanse of land in the valley ; situated at an elevation of 3,795mts above sea level. One can visit ashrams at Bhojbasa to or stroll around the Bhagirathi River, gazing at Bhagirathi Peaks in total awe.

The first one being the most followed route via Gaumukh Glacier for which one has to follow the trail going to Gaumukh which can be seen on the left side from Bhojbasa. Gaumukh Glacier is 4kms from Bhojbasa. One has to traverse the glacier and climb the unapologetically steep rugged wall to reach Tapovan.

While taking the second route the Bhagirathi River needs to be crossed from Bhojwasa itself. One has to walk on moraines for many kilometers with constant view of Gaumukh Glacier from distant. Then Climb the ridge covered with snow to reach Tapovan.

Tapovan campsite is located at the foot of Mount Shivling (6,543mts), just a glance of this mountain is a priceless gift of this trek.
